Bloc Party criticise Pete Doherty
Kele Okereke speaks out against star

Bloc Party's Kele Okereke has spoken out against Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty.
Okereke, who recently caused a storm with negative comments about Oasis, criticised Doherty's status as a "tortured artist".
When asked if an artist needed to suffer to create, Okereke told The Guardian: "That is something that has been misunderstood in recent times, and has led to really clichéd behaviour. Someone like Pete Doherty - his drug-taking and refusal to adhere to a traditional lifestyle - makes people thing that his art is somehow more relevant because he's a fuck-up.
"It's easier to be a misfit or a dropout than it is to be a genius and actually create something."
Meanwhile, Pete Doherty plays the first of two solo shows tonight (April 11), billed as 'An Evening With Peter Doherty'.
The event includes poetry, readings, acoustic songs and special guests, will take place at the Hackney Empire in London.
The second performance will take place on Thursday (April 12). Click back to NME.COM for full coverage from both gigs.

Pete Doherty kicks off solo shows

Special guests and classic songs see Libertine shine in London

Pete Doherty thrilled fans with the first of his two-night residency at London Hackney Empire this evening (April 11).
The Babyshambles frontman played a rare solo show, billed as An Evening With Pete Doherty, and threw himself into the action from the off.
Arriving onstage promptly at 7.30pm, Doherty introduced his first guest Alan Wass and sung several songs with him before leaving the Lefthand singer to complete his set.
Doherty was back onstage again later to introduce Bert Jansch. Again the pair collaborated on several songs before the former Libertine left the Pentangle legend to complete his set.
Then it was time for Doherty's main set. Dressed in the grey suit and trilby he wore to the 2007 Shockwaves NME Awards, the singer took to take the stage alone, winning applause as much for his intricate guitar playing as his impassioned vocals.
Doherty started with a list of favourites including 'Music When The Lights Go Out', 'In Love With A Feeling' and 'What A Waster' - with the latter seeing the singer switching the lyrics to include a spoken word line which ended with him pleading to "save me from the Taliban".
Doherty then sang more recent material, including 'The Blinding', which saw him joined by a guest MC, before warning the crowd "I'm going to try a new one on you."
Despite not having a title, fans warmed to the biblical references of a track the hardcore are now calling 'John The Baptists' Head', before the singer moved onto a seedy tale entitled 'Dilly Boys'.
Doherty then played a series of old favourites.
Dedicating 'What Katie Did' to "my beautiful fiancée", the singer's girlfriend, supermodel Kate Moss, then joined him to lend her vocals to 'La Belle Et La Bête' though she wasn't the only guest as rapper-prouducer Lethal Bizzle also contributed a verse.
With the likes of 'Albion' and The Libertines' songs including 'Death On The Stairs' and 'Up The Bracket' inspiring loud sing-a-longs, Doherty again included several new tunes.
One song referenced St Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes and also the name of the Paddington parish church that spawned the singer's beloved football team Queens Park Rangers, while 'Do You Know Me' highlighted his tabloid torments.
After a short interval for "a quick fag and a tune up", Doherty completed his set.
This time he performed the likes of 'Fuck Forever' and 'Tell It To Your King' before rapper The General - wearing a QPR shirt - joined Doherty for an extended version of first Babyshambles album track 'Pentonville'.
Doherty then rounded off the evening, with The Libertines' classic 'Time For Heroes', passionately telling the crowd "Thanks for your support in these troubled times."
For a report from tomorrow night (April 12) stay tuned to NME.COM, but in the meantime you can take part too.
Send your photos, videos and gig reviews to news@nme.com with Pete as the subject and we will publish the best.

Exclusive - Pete Doherty names Babyshambles producer

The ex Libertine tells NME.COM he's ready to start new album

Stephen Street is set to produce Babyshambles' new album.
The veteran producer who has worked with the likes of Blur and Kaiser Chiefs will take control of the band's second album in the next few weeks.
Speaking exclusively to NME.COM, Pete Doherty said his band were already to go.
"We're going in the studio with Stephen Street soon, we're going to make a start," he explained.
"I found it quite interesting a few things he said. I read in NME he said Graham Coxon is one of the finest guitar players he's ever worked with and I've always thought he's underrated. He gets plenty of praise but there's something special about Graham Coxon. I don't know, that comment from Stephen always stuck in my head."
Doherty added that he was feeling confident about the second album.
"Oh yeah! It's completely different this time around, completely different," he declared. "Not that we didn't feel confident before, I don't know what I was feeling. This one is more human."
Meanwhile his bandmates have speculated that the album could feature several special guests, with Amy Winehouse and Shaun Ryder among the possibilities.
Drummer Adam Ficek and bassist McConnell told XFM they had 35 tracks to consider for the record - due out in November - including 'Delivery', 'I Wish', 'Carryin Up The Morning', 'Death Left Hands', 'There She Goes' and 'Little Heartache'.
The duo added that they were looking forward to the band's arena tour which kicks off in November.
"We've been called an underachiever sort of band," said Ficek. "Hopefully after the arena tour we'll be in the position where we can rightfully say we're one of the best bands in Britain."

Pete Doherty - 'I've finished my acoustic album'
As Babyshambles start second record, their singer finishes solo effort

Pete Doherty has told NME.COM that he has completed a solo record that he wants to release this year.
As previously reported, the ex-Libertine is about to hit the studio with his band Babyshambles and producer Stephen Street, but explained that he has a solo record already finished.
Speaking to us about tracks he is considering for his band's album, Doherty explained: "I've got a song called 'Salome' which I haven't done with the band yet. I'm kind of saving it for the acoustic album, you know what I mean? You can't leave it lying around for too long."
When pressed, the Babyshambles frontman said he was ready to go with the band's new record, the follow-up to 2005's 'Down In Albion'.
"Well to be honest, I think it's pretty much done," he declared. "It's just now trying to convince the record company that everything doesn't need to be highly polished."
Regarding the acoustic record's future, a source at Doherty's label Parlophone explained to NME.COM that Babyshambles' second album would take priority.
"We're really keen to release Pete's acoustic record at some point in the future," they said, "but not until after the next Babyshambles album, that will come out first."
