Add this to your must-see list: Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre. The park welcomes 750,000 visitors and 350,000 concertgoers each year, and with good reason. Situated 6,200 feet above sea level, Red Rocks is the only naturally occurring amphitheatre in the world. This unique venue is nestled between dramatic 440-foot-tall red sandstone rocks that create awe-inspiring beauty. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the amphitheatre is considered the eighth wonder of the world and an acoustical phenomenon.
With seating for 9,000,
the venue attracts internationally recognized musicians (many of which have recorded live albums here), including U2, Sting, John Tesh and the Moody Blues.
After celebrating its 60th birthday in 2001, the park underwent a major renovation the following year. The construction saw the creation of a 30,000-square-foot underground visitor center, complete with restaurant and conference facility, located at the top of the amphitheatre. -- Drew Myron
