Chris Martin - New Single Is 'The Elbows’
Coldplay’s Chris Martin has been talking exclusively to Xfm about ‘Speed Of Sound’ being "the elbows" of the new album, his love of Razorlight and Franz Ferdinand and being a “total anal arseholeâ€.
Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Will Champion came into Xfm to speak to the Breakfast Show's Christian O’Connell about the band’s new single ‘Speed Of Sound’ and the rumours that the recording of the new album ‘X&Y’ were fraught with stress due to the band’s perfectionist demands.
“It was definitely hard work, but definitely rewarding,†Champion explained, “Every single record we’ve done – all three – have been pretty tricky, but without putting your heart and blood
into something you can’t really get anything out of itâ€
“We like to think about ourselves approaching it [the recording] like Paula Radcliff does,†Martin continued, “Work really hard and you might just win it in the end. So yes, it’s hard but very, very rewarding and exciting at the same time.
“It sounds really righteous but it’s more fun when you really work at it like that, when you become a total anal arsehole… [laughs] does that make sense? Can you use the same word twice? Is that a double positive? A tautology? Anyway, it’s because we’re obsessed about being in the band.â€
As for Christian’s remark that the new album is perhaps one of the most eagerly anticipated records of recent years, Martin was quick to add that his band are just as keen on other bands.
“But we feel the same way about Razorlight or Franz Ferdinand records!†he exclaimed, “We feel excited by loads of new bands. I mean, that fella Johnny Borrell? He’s pretty into what he does as well isn’t he?â€
As for the new single 'Speed Of Sound', Martin explained that while he’s proud of it, it only represents one element of what ‘X&Y’ sounds like.
“We spent three years trying to construct this whole record,†he explained, “So when someone says ‘Can we have a single?’ we feel like they’re trying to take one part of your body and show it off as the whole of what you look like. So this [‘Speed Of Sound’] is great, but its just the elbows. It’s the elbows of the whole albumâ€.

In other Coldplay news, the band played a secret show for MTV at the Round Chapel in Hackney, East London on Tuesday night (April 19) during which Martin climbed up onto one of the speaker cabinets during ’In My Place’ to reach, and then hug Noel Gallagher who was in the audience.
